What FiveM escrow is and what you can edit

When you buy a FiveM script on Tebex, it almost always comes with escrow. It is the official Cfx.re system (the company behind FiveM) to protect paid scripts. Here is what it does, what you can and cannot change, and how to fix the most common error.

What escrow is

The creator uploads the script to Cfx.re and picks which files get encrypted. When someone buys it on Tebex, the script is granted to the buyer's Cfx.re account. On start, the server checks its license key: the script only runs if the account that owns that key also owns the script.

According to the official Cfx.re documentation:

  • Lua files and YFT, YDD and YDR models can be encrypted.
  • The creator can leave files open with the escrow_ignore directive in fxmanifest.lua.
  • Escrowed scripts are only distributed through a Tebex package and cannot be transferred to another account.
  • You can use them on any server you own, as long as its license belongs to your account.

What you can edit

It depends on what the creator leaves open. The usual choice is to leave open what a server owner needs to adapt:

  • The configuration (config.lua): jobs, prices, keys, permissions.
  • The texts (locales): to translate or change messages.
  • The integrations (bridges / compat): the link to your framework, inventory, keys, fuel, notifications...
  • The interface (HTML, CSS, images), depending on the script.

In ROLO SCRIPT scripts, everything that talks to another script lives in open bridge/ or compat/ files with a 'custom' option. If your server uses something that is not on the list, you hook it up yourself without touching the encrypted code.

What you cannot edit

The encrypted logic: the Lua code the creator protected. It cannot be read or edited. If you need it to do something different, ask the creator: often there is already a config option or an export for it.

"You lack the required entitlement"

This is the most common error. It shows in the server console and the script does not start. It means the server license key does not belong to the account that bought the script. To fix it:

  1. Sign in to portal.cfx.re with the account that bought the script.
  2. Create or check the server license key with that same account.
  3. Put it in sv_licenseKey in your server.cfg (or in the txAdmin settings) and restart the server.

How you get updates

When a new version is out, download the script again from Granted Assets on portal.cfx.re: it always gives you the latest one. Before replacing the folder, back up your open files (config, locales, bridges) so you keep your changes. At ROLO SCRIPT we announce every version in the changelog channel of our Discord.

Why do creators use escrow?

So their work is not leaked or resold. In exchange, a good creator leaves open everything you need to fit the script to your server. To see how to install one step by step, follow How to install a FiveM script.
